Rare diseases are diseases with a particularly low prevalence; the European Union considers diseases to be rare when they affect not more than 5 per 10 000 persons in the European Union. It is estimated that between 5 000 and 8 000 distinct rare diseases exist, estimated as affecting between 6% and 8% of the population in the course of their lives.
